The la Pignade project was born from an atypical program that includes a house for the client’s relatives, a loft for guests, a garage used as a workshop, an office and a greenhouse. More than a house, the project is above all a meeting place for family and friends. Following this logic, the program is articulated around two volumes in the center of which is a large terrace covered by a green roof. The volumes are oriented towards the south and rise above the green roof in order to maximize the natural light in the living spaces and the greenhouse. The horizontality of the project and the place it gives to the plants make it fit harmoniously into its wooded site.

The house “Les Courcelles” is inserted in a block characterized mainly by brick facades with irregular alignments and simple cornices with linear ornamentations. Also typical are the irregular and asymmetrical layout of the openings in the facade and punctuated with the presence of a series of carriage porches due to the absence of service alleys at rear end of the lots.

The invested site was originally composed of two unified lots. Two principles therefore guided the design of the project: the dual character of the site with these two lots and the typology of the courtyard we call “Courcelle” defined as a small courtyard, a gap between two spaces or a small garden.

The project sought to fit discreetly into the urban fabric while respecting the proportions, the scale and the rhythm of the neighbouring buildings on the street and within the immediate neighbourhood.

Imposed by the city regulations, a contrasting materiality distinguishes the two volumes on the street side: a brown clay brick covers the new portion of the project building, while a grey Saint-Marc stone dresses the existing building while preserving the proportions of the volume and openings as well as the tripartite division of the original facade. The new incorporated carriage porche defines on the other hand the alignments of the overall fenestration punctuating both new facades.

Inside, the spaces are distributed around the 6 “Courcelles” developing on each level of the house from the basement level up to the mezzanine level: A planted English courtyard bringing natural light to the basement spaces defines a first “Courcelle”(exterior). A second “Courcelle”(interior) used as a service courtyard connects the garden side and the street through a carriage porche.

A third “Courcelle” (interior) opens up as an atrium within the heart of the house containing the dining room and the vertical stairway.

A fourth “Courcelle” (interior) is defined by footbridge over lit by a 50-foot linear skylight. A fifth “Courcelle” (exterior) defines a private “u” shape terrace delimited by 3 exterior walls overlooking the garden below.

And a sixth “Courcelle” (exterior) embedded within the sloped roof structure is finally accessible from the office space on the mezzanine level allowing full intimacy with respect to the nearby neighbours.

Love of Quebec

Rachel and Raphael fell in love with an old cottage on a huge piece of land bordering the Missisquoi River. It is impossible to think of changing location in these conditions, unless you throw your heart in the garbage. That leaves the house to change.

That’s when we got back on the job. The objective was to demolish the house and rebuild from the existing foundation.

In Quebec, there are many opportunities to renovate buildings on incredible land. In fact, incredible land is often built, and understandably so. So get creative and think renovation! We strongly encourage!!! 🙂

Preserved foundation

With an existing foundation, you have to be creative to come up with new layouts. We love puzzles (for real), and it is our strength to find the right “tetris”. Here we are very proud of the fluidity of the layout on all floors and the result of the new architectural form.

Aging siding

We like to think that siding can age well, but have we considered that it might become more beautiful as it ages? Often, we will see graying wood, which is quite a challenge to master. Its very distant cousin is corroded steel. Here, the clients wanted to work with huge corroded steel plates for the façade cladding. We expect a masterpiece. To be seen in the future!

This house, designed by Paul Bernier Architecte, is located on a plain near the Bromont Equestrian Center. The rural character of the area and the presence of equestrian activities set the tone for the design of this house.

The project is built in three simple volumes with steeply sloping roofs. The layout and spacing of these volumes is typical of the groupings of buildings in rural areas. The volume of the house and the garage are linked by the entrance block, entirely glazed, which maintains the effect of separation of the volumes. As soon as you approach the entrance, you can see the plain beyond the house.

The house is made of brick, stone and bronze finished steel for the roof. The use of noble, natural and durable materials gives the house a character of timelessness and durability. Its simple form and the patina of these materials refer to a certain tradition The refined details and certain reinterpretations, such as the way the dormers are made, make this a contemporary project, albeit one that is in line with continuity.

The set of three volumes also makes it possible to define protected exterior spaces that are open to the view. The feeling of integration of the house in its topography is facilitated by the use of low stone walls of the same type that will cover the visible parts of the foundations.

The conceptual approach to the interior is in continuity with that of the exterior. Large openings, well framed on the surrounding nature, give a contemplative character to the place. Lime plaster and white oak cladding on the walls and polished concrete floors contribute to an atmosphere of calm and timelessness.

A magnificent site calls for a discreet project, which leaves all the space to nature, trees and valleys.

Inspired by the site, the architectural intention was to develop a simple project, linked to the land by its shape, inviting the outside inside.

Thus, the house, dark and sober, settles delicately on a plateau, while advancing the wing of the rooms towards the south, following the relief. A transparent glass breakthrough marks the entrance, draws the eye, and offers a view of the deep green of the forest through the house. On one side, a black metal cladding that extends the roof, on the other, natural stone. And the slats, openwork, light, which border the terrace at the very end. And the slats, openwork, light, which border the terrace at the very end.

The house is simple, with a gabled roof, typical of Nordic architecture. Not very open and discreet on the façade, it opens up to embrace the view and the grandiose nature on the opposite façade.

The large windows and the terraces (on each level) invite you to marvel and contemplate.

The master suite, located in a wing perpendicular to the main body, seems to float and rise above the trees.

The interior, with its free and open spaces, is clear, neutral and sober, to magnify the light so particular to forests and mountains!

Thanks to its free and open organization, and its modernist simplicity, this house will be able to participate in a current, renewed architecture, which takes care of its inhabitants.
